Today I updated my voter registration and notified the office of the Secretary of State of the State of West Virginia that I have withdrawn from the Republican Party.
I cannot in good conscience support a political party that would nominate Donald Trump as its candidate for President of the United States.
The Republican Party has become a kind of Democratic Party "lite." It stands for slightly less government involvement in our daily lives and a slightly smaller tax burden. It is a lesser evil, to be sure ...but an evil nonetheless. And it is an evil that will stay with us until we decide to step out of line.
No government at any level, but especially the federal level, has any business deciding how we live our daily lives, unless our behavior has a material and malicious impact on the lives of the people with whom we come into contact or whose lives we affect. Stay out of our kitchens and bedrooms, our dens and closets. What we do there is none of your business ...or the government's.
Decisions on how we educate our children and how, and to what extent, we regulate commerce should be made locally. We should care for and support those who cannot care for and support themselves ...until they can. That, of course, is predicated on the assumption that people want to be self-supporting. A reasonable limit on time and eligibility would reduce, if not eliminate, welfare abuse. No one should be able to choose to live on the government dole forever, simply because he would rather not support himself.
Government does have a responsibility for our safety and defense. To that end, it should close our borders to any who seek to immigrate illegally. Further, it should punish and deport any who have crossed the border illegally and then committed violent crimes here. The government should maintain a standing military force, well trained and equipped to defend our interests anywhere in the world. It also should care for those who have served our country. It's the least we can do for our veterans.
Government should start locally, as should the taxes we pay to support that limited government. People who report an earned income should pay a percentage of that income. People who report a net capital gain on their investments should pay a percentage of that gain. People who own real property should pay a percentage of the assessed value of that property. People who die, having already paid taxes on any wealth they may have accumulated, should have the right to distribute that wealth in its entirety as they see fit.
